Alejandro meets with Woolly Mammoth, one of the youngest bands making serious noise in the San Antonio hardcore scene. What sets them apart isn’t just their age; it’s the way they blend raw heaviness with melodic depth, bringing a fresh edge to Texas hardcore.

From the jump, Woolly Mammoth makes it clear that their mission isn’t to fit in, it’s to stand out. They try to add melodic melodies throughout their songs, to give it more feel and emotion.

"We’re not trying to be like everybody else" - Max the Vocalist adds on

It’s a mindset that connects with younger crowds who might be discovering hardcore for the first time.

"I feel like we’re way younger than most of the hardcore bands in our scene.” says bassist Angel, who encourages the younger crowd to come out and explore this type of music.

Woolly Mammoth pulls inspiration from all over; their biggest being Outta Pocket, and Max’s vocal style draws from bands like Swear to God and Denied, blending influences into something personal and aggressive.

Their chemistry as a band is a big part of what makes them click.

“It’s pretty easy. Me and Josh have a lot of musical chemistry. We just groove really easily.” - says drummer Bogie

The band’s formation story starts at everyone favorite diy spot, the Alley. RIP.. Angel's Band, TIDALED, played its first show with Josh’s band, Rat House, Angel had the idea of a "an improvised hardcore set" and from there they started plotting a project, including two of Joshes school friends and long-time hardcore fans, Bogie and Leland later on.

Max, meanwhile, found his way in through by just hitting up Leland, the second guitarist asking if they need a vocalist. Max followed Leland from a show the two met at before.

When it comes to writing, the process is spontaneous and collaborative.

"Either me or Josh throws down a beat or a riff, and then everyone adds their own piece into it.” says Bogie

Every part of their sound is built with that same mix of patience, passion, and pressure; and the result is a band that’s rapidly carving out a space of their own in the scene.
