Alejandro debuts with Shigella, a slam metal band from Corpus Christi known for pushing the boundaries of the genre. With a name as infectious as their sound, the group pulls no punches, and in this conversation, they open up about what sets them apart, how they found each other, what it’s like crafting music that hits, and more.

The vocalist kicks things off by diving into how the band came together. His favorite band, Lamb of God, was playing a show in Corpus Christi. While in the crowd, Aiden; now the band’s guitarist, overheard him singing along and asked if he was in a band. At the time, he wasn’t. The two exchanged numbers and jammed together not long after. As their sound began to take shape, they eventually linked up with Ryan on drums and River on bass; and from there, Shigella was born.

What makes Shigella different? It’s not just the guttural vocals or their down-tuned brutality; it’s also where they’re from. Hailing from Corpus Christi, a city not widely known for its slam scene, they bring a raw, underground brutality to their sound, blending classic slam elements with touches of deathcore for something uniquely aggressive.

Their sound pulls inspiration from both classic slam pioneers and unexpected names like; Devourment, Peeling Flesh, and System of The Down. Blending those elements into something that feels sharp, sick, and totally their own.

The band also gets into what it’s like working together. Collaboration isn’t always easy when you’re pushing the limits of heaviness, but Shigella thrives on their strong chemistry. A lot of their writing process happens spontaneously, with ideas often coming together on the spot.

With more shows in the works and a growing presence in the Texas Slam scene, Shigella’s just getting started.
