Bandcamp (Pinback)

The most simplistically beautiful band that never got their laurels. Rob Crow and Armistead Smith IV are the sole driving force behind the legendary and unsung group that is Pinback. A rotating cast of band mates spanning their career has not dissuaded their creative and romantically picturesque output.

Their self titled debut released on the cusp of the 21st century remains an understated analogue of melodies and deceptively layered liminal soundtracks.

1999's release was presented in two versions that are both available under Ace Fu Records and Cutty Shark records. 44 minutes of slowcore music that puts you at peace with the drive home and the sunrise you're soon to meet.

Pinching elements of trip-hop a la Massive Attack; the liminal and warm moods of Duster; softly sung and at times dynamic vocal performances that later featured on Team Sleep's sole record with Our Ride To The Rectory.

Billie Eilish for male manipulators and artsy people is a description that comes to mind for the voice of Crow. The songs are timeless and depressing, but not in the way of suicide and "fuck my parents". A more existential and empty feeling that can either uplift or drag down depending on the medium they are received in.

A decidedly intimate tear jerk of a record that will garnish the sunlight speckled living room reading sessions and walks under the streetlamps...

STANDOUT TRACKS

TRIPOLI

abundantly catchy opener of the record that never ceases to tighten the throat and wet the eyes. I would die to this song.

LORO

featuring a bass line that punches you in the gut with its simple and emotive voice. Even more ear worm hooks and warm breathy singing alongside periods of scratchy dj inspired breaks in the song.

LYON

a song with an almost mirror influence of Pinegrove and wouldn't sit out of place on many acoustic indie records of greater acclaim. Crisp drums and a roomy sound with wavering organ playing to spice up Crow's more lively singing.
